How about some strong, black coffee this Friday morning? Are you ready for the weekend? How is your week? It’s been a super awesome week here. (How could it possibly be anything else after last weekend?)
I went to a concert with my favorite country-western artist, Corb Lund, this Wednesday. I had high expectations, since I love his contemporary country music a lot, but it was even better live. It was just awesome. I posted some photos from the concert here. I don’t exactly spend a lot of time in downtown Las Vegas, even though I live only minutes away. On my free-time I usually drive in any other direction, but down town. Standing there at the concert I realized that there’s actually some things I should take more advantage of, while living here. Like going to more good concerts, and horse events (the concert was part of a pre-rodeo party.)
I read a post by a fellow blogger earlier this week, it was about her home town Sacramento (CA.) It made me think about my home town. What town is my home town? Is it the town where I was born, and where my family comes from? That I left when I was 4 years old..or is it the ski resort where I grew up? Is it where I went to college? University? Or is it any of the places I’ve lived at? Is it my current city?
I’m kind of thinking of the western states, NV mostly, but also AZ, and CA as my home. Not any of the towns in particular, but more the amazing nature I like to spend time in, the mountains, the oceans of sweet smelling sage brush etc. But my hometown? That’s a tricky one, having lived a nomadic lifestyle most of my adult life, (with a fair amount of traveling and moving as a child as well.) Where is your home town? Is it the city you currently live in? Or somewhere else?
My family’s origin is from Dalarna, Sweden. I haven’t written much about that, so I’ll go with that in this post. Both my parents where born there, and their parents, and their parents, and their parents..for hundreds of years. (Vikings, hence the blog title.) Dalarna is a region, a little below the middle of Sweden. The most common symbol for the region, the Dala Horse, is now a symbol for all of Sweden. The origin of this wooden horse is near Mora, the town where I was born.
I think it’s a beautiful symbol. I was surrounded by dala horses as a kid, in all shapes and sizes. Some of the collective horses today is worth a lot of money. The province of Dalarna gets a lot of snow in the winter. The area has many beautiful lakes, and forests. The forest industry have been essential to the province throughout the centuries. The dala horse likely came to be when wood cutters had to spend long periods of time during the winter away from their families, passing time carving these horses for their children, to give them as gift upon their return.
I have one with me all the time, on my left arm. A tourist that visit this region in Sweden is in for a treat, no matter the season. It’s extremely beautiful, clean, and lots of nature areas to explore. There are bears in the woods. Wolves on some places. Lots of berries to pick in the fall. The towns are spread out, and small, many of them having main street as a walking street only, covered with cobblestones several hundred years old. My last visit was when I was pregnant with my daughter, 7 years ago. I’d love to hear about your home town!
Any fun plans for the weekend? I will read your coffee share on Sunday, I have some exploring of the western states to do before that. I have some ideas, (business in California,) but will very likely make a detour to Arizona as well. There might be some pretty horses involved. Who knows? I’ll tell you about it when I get back.
Does it start to look a lot like Christmas at your house? It does at my house. We have a beautiful tree, and the downstairs is beautifully decorated for the season. The outside of the house have a Christmas light show on display after dark. (I can’t take credit for any of it, but totally love it.)
