I’m so glad you could make it to our weekly coffee date! How are you? I mean, how are YOU really doing?

Many people work from home here in Sweden. Some businesses are closed. I personally know several people who lost their jobs. We are practicing social distancing, but people are doing this on very different levels. Essential businesses are open, schools are among these businesses. The older children have their lessons online, younger children, 15 and under have regular school. I’ve been working all week. Anyone with slightest symptoms of a cold are staying at home, both teachers and students. It is emptier than usual, but it actually feels good to go to work. I feel that we (my colleagues and I,) are providing an essential service caring for our future (the children) in these unusual times. When the children are taken cared of the parents with important jobs, that needs to work, can give their jobs undivided attention.

I follow the news closely, and of course there are so many thoughts going on in my head. I’m sure in everyones head. I do strongly believe in social distancing, to slow this virus down, and at the same time I believe that keeping the schools open as long as possible helps to keep us calm and strong. I’m saying no to all unnecessary social contacts for our family. I send my daughter to her school, and go to work, nothing else. I turn people away that wants to visit, and I’ve said no to numerous playdates for my daughter. I don’t go to the grocery store, I have my groceries delivered to my porch. For now we have everything we need. I even scored some yeast this week!

Do you have everything you need? Are you in good spirits? How is your area? Are you in quarantine? Are you working? Does the situation give you extra time on your hands?

Spring is here now, even though the mornings are cold. It’s been a beautiful week, and we’ve been playing outside with the children many hours every day. On Friday we joined a dance party over YouTube for school children in Sweden. There is a famous DJ that normally comes out to schools and dance with the kids, due to Corona he choose to do his thing over YouTube instead. It was fun! We had speakers outside at a playground area and danced with the kids almost two hours.

Thank you for joining me for coffee this weekend. What are you up to? I’ve been spending today (Saturday) putting a new desk together for my daughter. I let her do as much as she could herself. It made it into a longer project than it would of been if I did it myself, but it was definitely worth that. She mastered basic tools that she hadn’t had much experience with before, like a screwdriver and a hammer. She was very proud of herself, and the result was great 🙂

Please tell me how you are doing. Stay safe my friend.

Love,

Maria

  1. I think we are just ahead of you, Maria, we in the UK being, worryingly, two-three weeks behind Italy. We keep our schools open for a while, too, but eventually the numbers began to tell-not only the children absent but the staff off too, and because of this they eventually closed. They may even be closed now until September, that’s half a year, unprecedented. Lockdown came a couple of weeks afterwards.
This may be the pattern for you guys, too. Take care.

      • We are doing fine, children are doing school work online, we’ve set up a (not too strict) routine where we go for a walk after morning study -we are allowed out once a day for exercise, though I still walk the dog in the evening. It’s early days yet so things may get more difficult. My daughter is a trainee nurse so has been dealing with people with the virus, however her placement has now just been suspended by the university, and my wife has to still go to work as she cares for the elderly. That’s a worry as if we should get the virus, my Mum, who lives next door, has Alzheimer’s, diabetes, emphysema and anxiety, so if she should catch it it could be serious. But for the moment we’re good, the weather has been nice and sitting in the garden I’m now on my third book 😀 Which you might have seen over on Goodreads.

        • It does sound more serious in your area. I applaud you for following all the directions. unfortunately there are many people who don’t. Kind of makes you mad. At least it makes me mad..since we are all responsible for this, and each others well being. Keep safe my friend.

          • We have had that here, with people flouting the rules. But, slowly, it seems to be sinking in with people and most are doing as asked. You and your daughter keep safe too.

  2. I’m glad you both are well Maria, and you sure do provide a very needed service at your school. Great photo, stay safe guys! By the way next week will see the 80’s for high temps.

  3. Glad you are both doing well, as we are here, thankfully. We are minimizing our contact with others but I’m missing the face to face talks. People are social animals after all! This whole thing seems surreal – nearly the whole world is isolating. It is making people stop and think, question their lives and priorities. Not a bad thing, I suppose.
Our snow from the recent snowstorm is nearly all melted, so the spring bulbs are out again. Lots of crocus in the lawn, which I love to see. C’mon, Spring! ❤

  4. Sounds like you and your daughter are doing well. Life for me has changed little – I have been working from home full time any way. I’m also an introvert that doesn’t go out much. I am spending a huge amount of time outside, away from people. And washing my hands 😉 I hope you continue to have a good weekend and have a wonderful (healthy) week ahead!

  5. So glad your staying positive & well. In our little town all the restaurants are doing home deliveries, a few shops are shut & there are fines for shops who don’t have tape down to enforce social distancing which is being policed. We are getting our first food shop home delivered today, there have been a few more cases in our area. We are fine though.
Its so exciting getting new furniture, I love that your little treasure gets in & has a go. we are in our autumn now so I will enjoy your spring via our blogs. lol Have a fantastic week ahead.

    • Thank you. I am happy to hear that you have help getting your groceries as well. It makes a big difference if you don’t have to think about that. We would be fine anyways, but being able to limit social contacts feels good. Be safe and enjoy a beautiful fall 🙂

  6. Thanks for sharing how things are with you.My husband and I are in a 14 day self isolation required after we returned from Florida. Schools here are closed so my daughter is working from home and has her son and on alternate weeks her two step daughters. Her husband is now also working at home. They have devised a routine for the kids that includes school work and playtime. My husband and I are able to go for good walks as we live in the country and have some nice trails near us. A friend has brought us groceries. So all in all we are good! Stay safe and stay well!

  7. It’s great having coffee with you today. I’m still working even though everything is shut down except for essential services. The Veterinary laboratory is considered an essential service, so not much has changed for me except the work coming in to be tested has dropped about 30% – my managers told us we will have to cut employees hours to compensate. We will try not to lay off. I’m salary so am thankful this won’t affect my pay. I can still go to the stables and enjoy my ponies. We keep our distance at stables and it’s never very many people there. Our area is behind other areas in the US not too many affected. Praying it doesn’t get too bad here. Thanks for the coffee! Fun to here your daughter helped putting together her desk. 😊❤️🤗🥰

  8. Hi Maria,
Good to know things are under control (well, as much as they can be) over there.
Everything in Calif. is locked down. My son’s company had to lay most everyone off so he’s down to his part time job working for our church, but my wife is still teaching only remotely now, my daughter’s job helping developmentally disabled adults with their medical care is considered “essential” so she’s staying very busy and my youngest son is away at college.
So we’re all pretty good and we have enough room and yard for some free space to move around safely. We’ve even had good luck shopping so we’re good.
I almost wish I had some time off because I’d love to get more work done on some writing projects — but I am very pleased to have a job and be healthy (mostly).
    We are blessed.

  9. How I wish I could be going to school. I do miss working with my class. I have been struggling this week to try and figure out how I am going to teach grade 1s and 2s online!

    • I bet you do! Those little ones wold be a challenge to teach online. I can only imagine. How would one keep their attention? We’ve been encourage to video tape activities we have with our little students, in case of a future quarantine, then we could share them with parents and children’s caregivers could watch them with the children.

  10. Hi there, glad to hear you and your daughter are coping well with this new normal. Hang in there. In California my daughter, hubby, and I are on day 14 of sheltering at home. I’m definitely appreciating the many things we took for granted before the Coronavirus. My heart breaks every time I hear about all the suffering worldwide. Take care of yourselves, stay safe!

    • I hope all of you are staying healthy and in good spirits while sheltering at home. I talked to one of my friends in California the other day that choose to shelter in his RV, on the coast. That sounded pretty nice to me. Stay safe ❤

  11. Glad to hear you and your daughter are doing well. My family and I are all well. Only essential services and businesses are allowed to open in my city and province at the moment. I can still go out for walks and enjoy spring, the quietude and the open space by the lake. Stay well! #weekendcoffeeshare

  12. We here in the DFW area of Texas are under stay at home orders. My 99 year old aunt wants to go to routine doc visits and doesn’t want to understand. She does not have dementia – well maybe some. It’s like living with a 12 year old at times.
    Glad you all are well!

  13. My boys start their online lessons on Monday; they have been out of school for 2 weeks now. Sounds like things are very similar here in terms of staying home when sick…
Stay safe. Hope you have a nice week.

  14. Glad to hear you and your family are well. Our stay at home order came 3/24 from the Michigan governor. I too, had groceries delivered and will likely do it again, as available. Working remote full time, thank God, Bill’s company is closed for the duration. Praying this is over soon.

  15. We are doing fine… we are retired so we are at home. We have only been out to the grocery store twice. But we have gotten out to the beautiful outdoors of our fabulous desert.

We did drive through a little town that is always, always busy and it was a ghost town! Makes me nervous for our small businesses.

    Stay well… hugs!
