Welcome to the Weekend Coffee Share, a time for us to take a break out of our lives and enjoy some time catching up with friends (old and new)! Grab a cup of coffee and share with us! What’s been going on in your life?
I took the liberty to pour our coffee into thermoses today, I hope that’s OK. We are having our coffee on The Mike O’Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, admiring the view of Hoover Dam.
After a week of horrible air quality in the Las Vegas area it is so nice to get out! The weather is bright and sunny Nevada/Arizona style and 78 degrees. Doesn’t it feel nice up here on the bridge? What do you think about the view?
I think Hoover Dam is pretty amazing. This dam provides power for Nevada, Arizona, and California. To the amount of about 4 billion kilowatt-hours of hydroelectric power every year!
The memorial bridge is an arch bridge that crosses the Colorado River between the states of Arizona and Nevada. We are actually standing right on the border, one foot in Nevada, and one foot in Arizona. I’m so happy we could get out here today, the last time I was here (not counting driving over the bridge) I carried my now 7 year old daughter in a baby carrier..naturally she don’t remember that. She did enjoy today’s visit very much. We have been doing research about Hoover Dam this week, and we are going to spend time next week writing about it for ur Nevada Homeschooling Project. I absolutely LOVE our field trips.
How is your coffee? I do have more in my backpack if you need a refill. Do you have any fun plans for the weekend? We do have some plans for adventures in the Mojave Desert. I’ll tell you more about that when I get back.
I sure do appreciate you taking the time to have coffee with me this week. I loved having coffee with you. Now it’s your turn, tell me about your week!
Love,
Maria
Great view, but I’m terrified of heights so I probably wouldn’t ever get to see it without you showing me. 😉 That is one heck of a bathtub ring on the canyon walls!
This week I took lots of walks in the woods to view the wonderful foliage. Raked and shredded a huge pile of leaves (twice!) to use for mulch next spring, put my frosted annuals in the compost pile and went to my hometown fall festival to eat pumpkin donuts and apple pie with VT sharp cheddar cheese (provides bite to contrast the sweet). A good week!

Thank you Eliza! Lake Mead is the biggest reservoir in the US when it’s full, it is pretty low now.
It sounds like you’re having an absolutely wonderful week. I dreamed that I was in a snow landscape last night (it was a good dream.) I’m holding off going to a pumpkin patch because it’s too warm to actually bring home a pumpkin yet. I made that mistake when I lived in California, if you bring them home and decorate them more than a couple days before Halloween they’ll be rotten and stinky. Yuck. I have someone here that is very eager to pick one though. A fall festival sounds wonderful! Enjoy your weekend!

I have been to the Hoover Dam when I was about the same age as your daughter. And I still remember seeing it! Thanks for the offer of coffee but it is too late at night for me here in the Eastern Time Zone! I have had a good week with my riding and Biasini and to be honest with riding and trips to the gym my body is pretty tired and feeling a bit “friday”. It will be an early night for me! Enjoy your weekend.

I’m so happy to hear that you remember your childhood visit. I’ve always brought my daughter with me to many places, but now when she actually remembers and can relate, its meaningful in a different way. Even though I am sure that our subconscious earlier memories are important as well.
It’s the best way of tired when we are tired from exercise and physical work, don’t you think? I hope you got a good nights sleep, and have a wonderful weekend!

I ENJOYED having coffee with you at Hoover dam. I’ve been there many times and you took wonderful photos. I’ve had a crazy busy week working 6 days to cover a vacation. Am glad I’m off today. I work this weekend and then my weekend starts next Monday. I loved getting out of the city with you as your photos bring us right there! Have a great weekend! 😀♥️

I so enjoyed having coffee with you! I bet you felt right at home on that bridge then 🙂
Wow, you do have a very busy week this week. Hang in there. I hope there is some pony time for you even when your schedule is busy ❤

Oh thank you and yes, I see the ponies daily even if it’s a quick turn out with a brushing and hugs. I have to see them every day as it keeps me sane! 😉♥️

I’m so happy that you can do that. I know what a difference that makes!

Always amazed by human construction like this, both the foresight and the engineering. Love the contrast of colours. Thanks for coffee

Same here. My mom used to take me around Europe as a kid to admire structural designs from the Roman era. Thank you fore coming over for coffee.

Glad you could get out and get some fresh air. 78 and sunny – on the warm side, but nice! No triple digits! Beautiful photos of the dam (sounds odd, but…) Strangely enough, if I am on solid ground I can walk up to cliffs and have no problems skiing down impossibly steep slopes where you ski in an avalanche because every turn dislodges more snow which can only go down, but I have a hard time being at height on man made objects like bridges. I hope you have a great weekend!

Thanks, it wasn’t exactly fresh air, just not hazardous any more. LOL. It is better today, and there is outdoor adventure on the schedule.
I can understand the thing with heights. I hate flying, don’t tell anyone.. Enjoy your weekend!

Many years ago, when I was a teen on a summer work program I worked at a nursing home… the job that pretty much hooked me on working with the elderly. Anyway, One of the patients was an old engineer who worked on that dam. He used to tell the scariest (probably true) stories of things that went on during it’s construction… accidents and such. Just to think of how many died so that we could have it is… sobering. Yet, it is so very beautiful to see. Have a great week!

Wow, yes there is some stories around. A friend’s grandpa worked on the dam, and she’s been telling me stories that he told her. I believe there is a museum dedicated to the workers, I have not been there. I hope the move is going smoothly.

The move is going about as smooth as it can… so smooth that it’s actually kinda scary. It was so quiet last night that we had a hard time getting to sleep, so I turned the tv on low. We slept like logs under a snow pile. We need to replace 7 electric sockets (could ask maintenance, but it’s easy enough to do on our own), and the thermostat seems to be wonky (I will ask for that to be fixed). Other than that, the ice is smooth.

80-85% moved over the weekend. Mostly large things left that will have to wait for the truck on Saturday. Got 1 room cleaned and ready to turn over, will have the bath tonight after I get the racks all cleaned and sterilized. Smooth, and exhausting… Raining today so I took it kinda easy and slow.

Hi Maria. I too am always amazed at what men and women can do given the chance to pull clever engineering together to solve some big problem. I’ve been to this dam and agree – it is amazing.
I also recall when you mentioned that you were going to home school your daughter. I smiled because I knew what a great job you were going to do and how much fun you and she were/are going to have. My last story was about some fun I had with my part of home schooling out kids. I hope you stop by to check it out. Here’s the link if you care to visit right away.

Thanks for the coffee and tour of Hoover Dam, Maria. We will have to make the trip this next time. We did enjoy Boulder City that was set up for the original dam workers. Hope your daughter enjoyed it.

Wow – you definitely found a perfect day to visit the area. The clear blue skies were lovely against the colors on the ground and below where you were standing. Your daughter is so lucky you take her on adventures as you do! Hope you have a wonderful week!!
