I love to be a tourist in time, in historical places. A road trip to a Ghost Town, with an exciting past, surrounded by legends, and real life stories is right up my alley.

Bodie is an old ”Ghost Town”. Back in 1880, around 10 000 people called Bodie their home. Their lives circled around gold mining, and the big mill. Nowadays it’s a well maintained historic park.

If I had to pick one favorite Ghost Town to visit, Bodie would be it. It’s located on the top of a hill. The surrounding nature is spectacular. It’s close to Yosemite, June Lake, and several other out of this world beautiful places.

The place is a photographers dream. The light is often spectacular. The town looks completely different depending on the season. Many of the houses are in great shape. You can walk around for hours and have a wonderful time. Or just walk through town once, on your way to one of the nearby nature attractions. Have you been there?

I hope you will show us your latest, or favorite tourist attraction. Have an awesome day!

It’s all about experiences, and the healing power of nature. Life is about choosing happiness. I entered the magic world of photography when I was five years old. My gypsy soul have taken me to many different countries, and definitely taught me to be more humble. I believe that you are what you eat, body and soul. I enjoy growing my own food, and spending time outdoors. A Sagittarius loves to travel, have an open mind and, and a philosophical view. It motivates them to wander around the world in search of the meaning of life. Sagittarius is extrovert, optimistic and enthusiastic, and likes changes. A lot of that perfectly describes me. The fact that my ancestors, on both parents sides, were vikings, doesn’t exactly lessen my desire to explore. Maybe a slightly more mindful exploring, compared to the average viking. My blog, and my art prints is a results of my (inner and outer) explorations. Love, Maria

  1. Oh my goodness, Maria, your images of Bodie are SPECTACULAR!!! I’m trying to remember if we visited Bodie as a kid during one of my many trips to Yosemite. We always drove up the Tioga Pass from Hwy 395 (from San Diego) and I know I’ve camped at June Lake. That whole 395/Eastern Sierra is a wonderful drive. In fact when we visit Tuolumne Meadows (in Yosemite–I’ll bet you know about it), from Sacramento we drive up to South Lake Tahoe, hit the Kingsbury grade and drive down into Carson City then the 395. I’ve driven it in 3.5 hours from my driveway to the Tuolumne Campground! Thanks for promoting Sunday Stills with your beautiful photography!

    1. Thank you Terri! Your kind words mean a lot. I actually took them with a cheap point and shoot camera, a few years ago. My full frame camera was stolen, and I had recently become a single mom. The only camera I could afford was under $100. Several of the photos from Bodie actually got published in a magazine. I had the front cover, and a two page spread inside the magazine. I still haven’t told them about my change of camera, they never said anything other than that they loved the photos. LOL. I’m happy you enjoyed them as well πŸ™‚

I love driving the 395 in every direction. It’s probably one of the most scenic drives in the world, with all the spectacular changes in the landscapes. I hope your new week got a great start to it!

      1. Wow, Maria, that is so impressive! I’m not surprised to hear those images made the cover and published! As one photographer told me, on equipment, the image comes from the photographer him/herself not just from the camera!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words my friend. It is a very interesting place. The guided tours are awesome, as well as the information that is spread out around the town. I love going there.

    1. Thank you Nancy! It is a very cool place to visit. Bodie’s past is almost too colorful to write about. After visiting for the first time I tried to learn more about the place. I found lots of legends, stories that made it difficult to sleep at night, and others that were just very interesting, about hardcore families in the wild wild west. Of course the unique location, with so much surrounding beauty make it well worth the drive. Definitely put it on your list πŸ™‚ Enjoy your road trip!

    1. Thank you! “It feels like they leave a story hanging in the air.” Exactly! I love that about them. If I can find a biography written by someone in the area, I always buy it, and indulge more in the history.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words Carol. We have many Ghost towns in the western states. I’ve always loved history, and those places are full of so much history. Usually they are strategically places, next to a river, or on the top of a mountain etc. Which makes the scenery spectacular. Another favorite Ghost Town, that is actually still very much alive, is Virginia City (Bonanza) in Nevada. I go their as often as I can. There’s some interesting people living there today.

  2. Oh! I’m so pleased to find you here! I just blundered into the Sunday Stills Photo Challenge and I’m getting the lay of the land. It’s nice to see a familiar photographer among the links πŸ™‚

Of course I love the theme you went with here πŸ™‚ That last shot of the window is just perfect.
